Merging Two Homes into One: Tips on HVAC Systems

Your HVAC System Could Be Making Your Allergies Worse

With the arrival of spring comes the arrival of allergies. If you are prone to allergies, your HVAC system could be making your allergies worse by allowing allergens into your home or not properly filtering allergens out. There are some simple things that you can do in order to reduce allergens in your home this spring.

Replace Your Filters

Dirty filters are less efficient at doing their job of filtering, and can also cause dust and allergens to spread as they build up on the filters. If you use high-efficiency air filters, they should be changed once every three months for the most optimal performance.

When you replace your air filter, realize that all air-filters are not created equal. Air filters are rated on a scale called the MERV scale, which determines the size of particles the filter can catch. Filters rated a one do not catch smaller particles, while filters rated a 20 catch the smallest particles. When you buy an air filter, you should aim for a MERV rating of 8 or above, which will help remover fine particles in your home.

Have a Full Check-Up

One good way to reduce allergens in your home is by having an HVAC service come and inspect your system. Professionals can identify built-up dust and debris in your system that you might not catch, such as dust gathering in your ducts and ensure that your system does not have any blockages of debris, which will spread allergens.

Clean Out Vents

If your air vents are dusty, then as the air circulates around your home the dust and allergens will spread. Dust your vents thoroughly and in the correct order. In order to ensure that your home is as free from dust as possible, dust the surrounding areas and save the vents for last.

Don't Ignore the Exterior

Your outdoor AC operates by pulling in air from the outside into the unit and then circulating it around your home. If there is debris near your unit or dust built-up on it, it will be sucked into your home and allowed to circulate. Don't neglect to dust or even vacuuming the area surrounding your exterior unit. Keeping this area free from debris and dust will ensure that fewer allergens enter your home.

Take the time to do the few things on this list in order to ensure your HVAC system doesn't circulate allergens, reducing your allergies this coming spring. For more information, contact your local HVAC services.
