Merging Two Homes into One: Tips on HVAC Systems

How To Address 3 Common Air Conditioning Issues

As you start using your air conditioner this spring, pay attention to how your AC performs as well as how it sounds. The performance and sound of your AC will let you know if you have any underlying issues to take care of before it gets hot outside. Here is a list of common issues:

#1 Your AC Is Running Short Cycles

When you turn on your air conditioner, it should run a complete cycle. A complete cycle usually takes anywhere from ten to twenty minutes. Your AC should not be coming on for five minutes and then turning off. Repeat mini-cycles, or short-cycles like this, are tough on your AC. Short cycles mean your AC unit is not going through a full cooling cycle, which can lead to damage to your unit over time. In addition, short cycling can drive up your energy costs and result in your home not really cooling off.

#2 Your AC is Not Pushing Enough Air

When you turn on your AC, a decent amount of air should come through the vents. The force of the air should be high enough to push the air throughout the room. If your AC seems to only be pushing out a small amount of air, there are a few issues that could be at play. Your coils could be freezing, trapping cold air inside of your air conditioner instead of pushing it out to your home. Or you could have a leak in your ductwork that is letting out all the cool air too early.

#3 Your AC Isn't Really Cooling Your Home

When you turn on your AC, the air should feel cool. Depending on the starting temperature inside of your home, it may take a few hours to cool off your home. However, it shouldn't take all day to cool off your home. If your AC isn't really cooling off your home, there could be multiple issues at play. There could be damage to the ductwork, resulting in the cold air leaking out instead of getting into your home. The refrigerant, responsible for cooling things off, could be leaking or component could be overheating.

If your air conditioning keeps turning on and off after only a few minutes, you have a short-cycling problem. If your air conditioning isn't really cooling your house or isn't pushing through enough air, there are a host of issues that could be at play. If you notice any of these three issues with your air conditioner this spring, speak to an air conditioning repair service for more information. They will determine the root cause of the issue and fix your AC so when it really gets hot this summer, you will be able to keep your home cool.
